Rajon Rondo is a former Los Angeles Lakers point guard, that looks set to be reunited with the team. Rondo has recently gotten a buyout from the Memphis Grizzlies, and most reports indicate that the Los Angeles Lakers are the frontrunner for his services. He will certainly be welcome back in Los Angeles. However, prior to his buyout, it seems as though the Los Angeles Lakers were looking at other options.

Jon Krawczynski of the Athletic has recently revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers were strongly considering signing Isaiah Thomas prior to Rajon Rondo's agreement with the Grizzlies. Isaiah Thomas notably played for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2017-18 season.

This is certainly an interesting development, and it's easy to see how the Lakers could have used both point guards. No one would expect Isaiah Thomas to be the prolific scorer he was in his Boston Celtics days if he were to become a Los Angeles Laker, but he could definitely provide some instant offense from the bench if he were called upon. Rajon Rondo on the other hand, would be a player that is focused on facilitating for others in limited minutes. He also knows how to play with both LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and would fit perfectly into a smaller role.

While acquiring Isaiah Thomas could have potentially been a good move for the Los Angeles Lakers, it seems as though they went with Rajon Rondo instead, and he was notably part of their 2020 championship run. It could be beneficial to have a player who is familiar with the playstyles of two superstars on the roster, and someone who can be comfortable in a smaller role. While the Lakers seem to believe Rajon Rondo would be a better fit for their roster, Isaiah Thomas certainly deserves a chance with another team, and hopefully he gets one.
