Damian Lillard has been one of the league's consistently underrated superstars, despite being the main reason for the Portland Trail Blazers consistently being a playoff team. There's no doubt that the team would be a lot worse if they were to be without their superstar.

We can safely say that Damian Lillard is a top-tier point guard, and it seems as though some believe he has a case for being the best point guard in the business. Newly-hired Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups has recently stated his belief that Damian Lillard is the best point guard in the NBA.

While it makes sense that Chauncey Billups would express support for his superstar, Damian Lillard's numbers certainly put him in the conversation for being the best. Over the course of the 2020-21 season, Lillard averaged 28.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 7.5 APG while also leading the Trail Blazers to the 6th seed without a single All-Star teammate. Lillard himself has no shortage of confidence in himself either. He viewed himself as an MVP candidate last season, while also stating his belief that he's one of the best players in the league.

Damian Lillard has the case to be the best, but there's no doubt that there are guards who are in that same conversation. Stephen Curry was red-hot on his way to the scoring title last season. Trae Young just made the Eastern Conference Finals with an upstart Atlanta Hawks team. There's always competition, but this is certainly an era where there are a lot of talented point guards in the league.

It remains to be seen whether Damian Lillard will be able to separate himself from the league's other point guards. One way to do that would be going further in the playoffs, and while the Trail Blazers did have a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2019, they haven't been able to reach those same heights over the last two seasons. Hopefully, the introduction of Chauncey Billups will help change some things around, and perhaps we'll see Lillard make a deep playoff run this season.
