LeBron James Explains Why Tom Brady Isn't The GOAT Athlete
For most football fans, Tom Brady is something like Michael Jordan, not in terms of impressiveness, but when speaking about dominance.
Brady has won seven Super Bowls throughout his career. He's a multiple-time MVP, the all-time leader in passing yards, and owns dozens of records in the National Football League.
But, even if there are thousands of people who consider him to be the GOAT, LeBron James doesn't seem to agree with that distinction.
Several months ago, the Los Angeles Lakers star explained why Brady, as good as he is, shouldn't be considered the GOAT athlete:
“My only argument with a football player being the greatest athlete of all time is that they only gotta play one side of the floor, man,” LeBron said, as quoted by Sportscasting. “Yes, Brady is unbelievable. Brady is the greatest quarterback I’ve ever seen, but he affects the game one way.”
“As physical as football is — and to the body, I know it’s crazy to the body — but for a quarterback, [Patriots coach Bill] Belichick has done a great job of implementing those five guys in front to protect that asset,” The King continued.
“For us [as basketball players], every single night, you gotta know both sides. … When I played football, offensively, I never even talked to the defensive side. I never even talked to y’all. Ain’t nothing to talk about. I’m not saying he’s not great. He’s the greatest football player of all time,” LeBron concluded.
LeBron is right to some extent. Brady isn't exactly athletic, mobile, or even fast. He's also had a great offensive line protecting him for most of his career, and he -- literally doesn't play any defense.
But if we were to look at his individual accolades, it would be hard to make a case against Brady as the best player in the history of the NFL and one of the winningest athletes overall.
At the end of the day, it's hard to compare sports and maybe there isn't even a point to it, but these debates are always fun to have.
