LeBron James' Fenway Sports Group Interested In Acquiring An NBA Franchise

LeBron James took over the throne in basketball after Michael Jordan's retirement and has become one of the most marketable athletes in the world. Outside of his brilliance on the court, LeBron has shown that he is a shrewd businessman.

LeBron has revealed that his goal is to own an NBA franchise and it seems like that will become a reality sooner than many anticipated. When that materializes, LeBron will be the third former player to own an NBA team behind Shaquille O'Neal and Jordan. While O'Neal is not an active member of the Sacramento Kings, MJ is the CEO of the Charlotte Hornets and has made it clear he wants to win a championship with the Hornets.

LBJ has been a part of Fenway Sports Group and bought a 2% stake in English Premier League giants, Liverpool, in 2011 after the Boston-based organization bought the football club in 2011.

On his quest to own an NBA team, Fenway Sports have been on an acquisition spree. They started with the Boston Red Sox in the MLB and are closing a deal to own the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. According to Dan Primack of Axios, they will not be slowing down after acquiring the Penguins.

"FSG currently owns the Boston Red Sox and a NASCAR team in the U.S., plus Liverpool F.C. in Europe. It also recently invested in Spring Hill Group, a content production firm co-founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter (both of whom have small stakes in FSG)."

"A source close to the FSG/Penguins negotiations says that the sale price will be around $875 million, and adds that FSG would have been interested in buying the Boston Bruins were the club to have been available. The sellers are financier Ron Burkle and Penguins legend Mario Lemieux."

He continued:

"Fenway Sports Group wants to buy an NBA team once it's done acquiring the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins."

Nonetheless, LeBron is still delivering on the hardwood, striving to lift the Los Angeles Lakers out of their slump and portray them as the championship contenders they ought to be.
