The Dallas Mavericks came into their two games against the Charlotte Hornets after losing 11 of their last 18.

The two games against the lowly Hornets were supposed to get them back on track, but the Mavs lost both. After the second defeat, former Mav and current Hornet Dennis Smith Jr. seemed pretty happy to beat his old team.

"Hell yeah," Smith said when asked if the stakes for the Mavs made this win sweeter. "That's all we said pregame, put their a** in the dirt."

The Mavericks were 16-point favorites for the first game but lost 117-109, with Smith drilling a three-pointer late in the closing stages to squash any hope they had of winning. The second game saw the Hornets win 110-104 as they improved to 25-51 on the season and piled on the misery on the Mavs.

The Mavericks are out of the play-in spots at the moment as they are the 11th seed with a 36-39 record. They had the injury excuse for some of their previous losses, but Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving played both these games and they still lost.

The Mavericks Look Like A Lost Cause At The Moment

The Mavericks have now lost four in a row and it is a very real possibility at this point that they won't even make the play-in tournament. Considering they reached the Western Conference Finals last season, it would be an epic failure to not even finish in the play-in spots.

They just seem to have too many flaws and discontent seems to be rising within the camp as well. Doncic revealed that he is frustrated for a lot of reasons and it's not just about basketball. He has looked a bit out of it but head coach Jason Kidd backed his superstar to get his swagger back soon. The Mavs better hope that he does, as that is the only way their season can be saved.
