Trae Young And Dejounte Murray Are Having Issues To Connect This Season
Trae Young and Dejounte Murray are reportedly still learning from each other amid a tumultuous Atlanta Hawks season.
The Atlanta Hawks started the 2022-23 NBA season with high expectations, and at some point, they were playing at a great level.
The pairing of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray looked very good during those first matches, but things aren't going that smoothly for them anymore.
"I think that they’re still learning from each other. It’s surprising it’s taking this long for them to learn from each other, especially considering the reports that Trae wanted Dejounte to come to Atlanta…," the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Lauren Williams told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
The Hawks made one of the most interesting moves of the 2022 offseason, trading for Murray, who became an All-Star in San Antonio but didn't have the tools to compete with the Spurs. He appeared to have found his place alongside Trae Young, but things haven't gone as expected.
Nate McMillan and Young reportedly had a complicated relationship in Atlanta, and things got so serious that the locker room was split between two sides. Now, Trae could be traded by the Hawks if this situation doesn't get better.
Trae Young Struggles To Connect With Teammates
McMillan is gone now and Quin Snyder is ready to lead this team to get things back on track. Meanwhile, Trae remains their superstar, and the player has some more work to do to become the player that his team needs. However, Young seemingly has a hard time when connecting with teammates, Williams added.
"Trae is a nice guy, but sometimes he has some trouble endearing himself to his teammates off the court. At least, that’s what I’ve heard. By all accounts, they like playing with him, but sometimes when I look at the groups and who’s close with who, I often see Dejounte, John Collins, Onyeka Okongwu, and De’Andre Hunter. That’s the crew. It’s like almost everybody else is trickling in and out, so to speak. Again, this is just speculation. They know what goes on in their locker room way more than I do, but you’d think with Trae wanting Dejounte there that they would be a little bit closer than they are. By all accounts, it could be that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown sort of thing where it’s like we like each other, but we’re not best friends. That could be essentially what it is."
The Hawks currently rank 8th in the Eastern Conference with a 31-31 record. Considering how bad they've played at some points this season, that's still pretty good for them. They can build on that and finish the season on a high note, but their players will need to put in the effort.
Perhaps Snyder can bring the team back to life, with the two guards showing the way for the rest. The final stretch of the season could be beneficial for the Hawks, but we have to sit and wait for the results.
