Donovan Mitchell and his Cleveland Cavaliers have had an incredible 2022-23 NBA season, becoming one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

Now that they have their playoffs berth secured, Mitchell has revealed he'd like to face the New York Knicks in the postseason.

“It’s full circle,” the 26-year-old guard told the New York Daily News. “You wouldn’t want it any other way. What kid wouldn’t want to play against his hometown team in the playoffs? I think for me, I wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s a storybook ending — it’s not ending, but it’s a storyline. Something that’s really special and near and dear to me, being able to play in a playoff game in front of my friends and family, the team that I grew up watching.”

This is an interesting idea since Mitchell wanted to play with the Knicks and he was convinced he would join them before the Cavaliers made the surprising move that brought him to Cleveland.

Other teams like the Miami Heat were also linked with Mitchell, but in the end, the Utah Jazz decided to do business with the Cavs in a move that worked wonders for the 2016 NBA champions.

Cleveland Cavaliers Made It To NBA Playoffs Without LeBron James For The First Time Since 1997-98

Now, Mitchell is getting ready to defend these colors in the playoffs, but it's still unclear which team they will face in the postseason. They made it to the big party without LeBron James on the roster for the first time since 1997-98

If the season ended today, they would face the 5th-seed New York Knicks.

This duel looks incredibly attractive for the rest of NBA fans given the quality these two teams have shown in their recent duels. Mitchell is leading his Cavs, while Jalen Brunson is doing the same with the Knicks and if they go at it in the playoffs, the matchup will be memorable.

The Knicks can overtake the Cavaliers in the standings, but that looks very hard right now. Either way, it's very likely to see these two going at it in the first round of the postseason.
