NBA Fans React To The League Potentially Banning Charges: "Kevin Love And Kyle Lowry Will Lose Their Jobs?"

There have been suggestions that the NBA should eliminate charges, and fans don't seem best pleased with the idea.

Modern NBA basketball is very oriented to offensive play, there's a reason older generations of players regularly have issues with the lack of defense in this era. Many physicalities have been eliminated from the game, but players today have gotten much craftier at drawing offensive fouls.

A charge is when an offensive player uses force to move the body of a set defender illegally to try and make a basket. But at times, attempts to draw charges have led to players picking up injuries. As such, there have been suggestions that the charging foul could be banned. Thunder GM Sam Presti spoke against it, and NBA fans reacted.

"How many more limitations are we going to place on the defense? Just a real question for the league: what kind of game do you want to have?... Hopefully, we can find ways to help the defense be a part of basketball too."

The conversation about banning charges has been a hot topic of discussion lately. Fans had a lot to say about this topic, with most being against the idea on Reddit.

The NBA has become very centered around offensive play, which is something of an issue. As one fan put it, a rule change like this would only take that to another level.

A lot of the reason that this has come up is that referees have been a bit inconsistent recently. One comment pointed that out.

Giannis Antetokounmpo tends to be quite physical in the paint, it's part of what makes him so unstoppable. If the charge is taken away, he would be able to get away with a lot more, and it would lead to what this comment suggested.

Fans seem to agree with the fact that any rule change to this effect would be detrimental to the game. It's an interesting conversation, but the rule isn't likely to go anywhere at the moment.

Doc Rivers Spoke Out Against Banning The Charge

Mark Cuban had an interesting idea for what the NBA can do to make a change to the rule without taking it away. But Doc Rivers explicitly disagreed that it should be banned, making a compelling argument.

"No, not at all, unless they just want a 250-250 game," Rivers said. "I think the only thing there is some of the charges people take can be viewed as reckless. And so they can review that. They can’t take it away."

There are a lot of issues with refereeing that can likely be fixed by improving the quality. Changing rules is something that should be done only after a lot of thought, and even if the league is thinking about this, it's not likely to change anytime soon.
