A Rival Scout Is Probably Mad After The Spurs Got The No. 1 Pick And Victor Wembanyama: "The Three Best Center Prospects Of The Last 35 Years..."

There was a ton of excitement in the lead-up to the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery, but there was one particular outcome that an NBA scout wasn't looking forward to.

The San Antonio Spurs were tied for the best odds to land the top pick, but a rival scout told LJ Ellis from SpursTalk that it'd be 'bulls***' if the Spurs got it to draft Victor Wembanyama.

“F—- that. Those guys have gotten enough luck already. They already got Tim (Duncan) and Dave (Robinson). Being able to draft the three best center prospects of the last 35 years would be some bullsh–.”

Shaquille O'Neal certainly would have something to say about not being one of the three best center prospects in the eyes of this scout. Unfortunately for this individual, the Spurs did indeed get the first pick, and you wonder just how mad he was when he saw that. San Antonio winning the lottery in the years when Wembanyama, Tim Duncan, and David Robinson were in the draft sure would be frustrating for their rivals.

In the 1986-87 season, San Antonio finished with a 28-54 record and they landed Robinson with the first pick thanks to that. He would not join the team until 1989 due to naval service, but when he finally did, he turned the Spurs into a perennial playoff team. In the 1996-97 season, however, Robinson only played six games due to injuries, and the team, in general, was struck by the injury big. They finished 20-62 to get the first pick in the 1997 NBA Draft and Duncan fell into their lap. Together, the two would win titles in 1999 and 2003, after which Robinson retired. Duncan would win three more titles before he walked away from the game in 2016.

Victor Wembanyama Revealed His Goal With The Spurs

Expectations were always going to be sky-high for Wembanyama no matter where he went, but with the Spurs, it is a tad bit higher than at other locations. He now has to live up to what Robinson and Duncan accomplished and that means becoming a perennial All-Star and winning multiple titles.

After the Spurs won the lottery, he stated that his goal is to win a title as soon as he can. Provided he stays healthy, he is going to be an absolute superstar and San Antonio needs to ensure they put the right pieces around him so that he can lead them back to the top.
