Dallas Mavericks Aren't Interested In D'Angelo Russell In Potential Kyrie Irving Trade

D'Angelo Russell seemed like he was set to be with the Los Angeles Lakers for the foreseeable future, but his poor showing in the Denver Nuggets series seems to have changed all that.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been credited with an interest in Kyrie Irving for a long time. And there has been speculation about a potential sign-and-trade with the Dallas Mavericks. If that is floated though, recent reports suggest the Mavs wouldn't want Russell back in any such deal.

"The Dallas Mavericks are not interested in D'Angelo Russell," wrote NBA insider Marc Stein.

This stands to reason, Kyrie Irving can excel in an offense next to Luka Doncic, but the same cannot be said for D'Angelo Russell. The fit next to Doncic would be quite poor and his deal might also prove to be a bit too rich for the Mavs' tastes. They seem focused on re-signing Kyrie Irving in any case, but even if they don't, they'd likely want wing players or big men in return for him.

As far as the Los Angeles Lakers are concerned, they wish to sign Austin Reaves to a big deal and keep him. Otherwise, a package built around him and players like Jarred Vanderbilt and Mo Bamba might be appealing to the Mavericks. However, any deal of this nature would prove to be quite difficult to execute.

LeBron James Is Reportedly A Big Reason For D'Angelo Russell Potentially Being Moved

While his performances against the Nuggets were quite poor, there is still no reason for D'Angelo Russell to not get consideration from the Los Angeles Lakers. However, reports suggest that LeBron James is not a big fan of Russell, and if that is the case, then it's easy to understand why the Lakers might not bring him back. What's more, LeBron reportedly wants the role on the team that Russell would occupy on the court

“D'Angelo Russell was a shell of himself in these playoffs. I don’t think we’ll see D’Angelo Russell back with the Lakers. They can use a point guard that can create his shot and I think LeBron wants to fade more into the role as a secondary scorer and playmaker.”

However it shakes out, it seems D'Angelo Russell's future is very uncertain at the moment. He would likely not want to go play next to a ball-dominant point guard like Luka Doncic considering his style either. It will be interesting to see how all these situations shake out.
