EuroLeague MVP Sasha Vezenkov Keen On Signing With Sacramento
The Sacramento Kings are most likely to get a EuroLeague boost this summer in the form of MVP Sasha Vezenkov.
At 6-foot-9, the forward was looked at as one of the best basketball players outside the country and was selected as the 57th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Brooklyn Nets. Per Sportsnaut, his draft rights were traded twice in the last three years.
The Kings acquired him from the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2022. While he was invited to Las Vegas last summer, the 28-year-old inked a deal with Olympiacos Piraeus instead.
Per NBA insider Marc Stein, there is a strong indication that both parties intend to unite this summer. Even Kings coach Mike Brown had some lavish praise for Vezenkov.
“The way we play, he fits in really good. He shoots the 3 ball. He’s got size. He’s got toughness. He rebounds," he told Kings reporter, Sean Cunningham.
"All those things are exciting with the way we play the game of basketball, so we’ll let him finish out his season, and then we’ll make decisions from there…I tell you what, the way he shoots the ball, we like to get up a lot of 3s. We space the floor, in my opinion, really, really well. We play extremely fast, and so I think he can be a really effective player in the NBA at a high level, especially with his toughness. He’s not afraid at all and I love that about him."
Earlier, Vezenkov was in action during Olympiacos' skirmish against Monaco. He top-scored with 19 points, 6 boards, and 3 assists to help his side win 76-62. The team are table toppers with a 24-10 record and will face PAOK in the semifinals.
The Sacramento Kings Were One Of The More Impressive Teams This Season
Buoyed by De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, and headed admirably by Mike Brown, Sacramento was one of the top teams since the start of the season, and their hard efforts translated them to making the playoffs after 16 seasons.
They faced off against the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs and put them under the pump by recording two wins to go 2-0, but were later undone with the latter winning four to take the series.
Such was their dominance that former NBA star Charles Barkley made a bold claim that they would go on to make the Conference Finals. "The Sacramento Kings are going to the conference finals," Barkley remarked.
That said, the Kings are one of the teams to watch out for next season after their dream run, and with the potential addition of Vezenkov, they have another versatile asset who bolsters their postseason, and even possibly title hopes.
