There Is A 'Rising Expectation' In Boston That Joe Mazzulla Will Pay The Price For Celtics' Collapse
On their third head coach in just three years, the Boston Celtics were hoping that head coach Joe Mazzulla would be the one to usher in the next great era in franchise history. Instead, in his very first season on the bench, Mazz has turned into the biggest scapegoat for a Celtics team on the brink of elimination.
Down 3-0 to the Heat, Celtics fans are boiling over with frustration and there's a sense around the city that changes will be coming this offseason. In fact, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the parting of Joe Mazzulla may be the first domino to fall.
“There is a wave of anger from New England and a rising expectation elsewhere Joe Mazzulla will pay the price for this 0-3 hole the Celtics find themselves in.”
Depending on who you ask, the Celtics have had varying levels of success. While they've made the Conference Finals in three of the past four years, the C's just can't seem to get over the hump and continue to be plagued with focus and consistency issues.
Last year, Ime Udoka did a good job of getting this group to play together and keeping them reliant on their defense to win games. Under Mazzulla, that hasn't been the case and many Celtics fans don't feel like waiting for him to learn his job on the fly.
Can Celtics Show Some Life In East Finals?
How Boston closes this series may very well determine how the team navigates its summer. With their backs against the wall, the world is watching to see how Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown respond, and if they can show enough to at least give the Heat a fight on their way to the final round.
“Yeah, I think it's just tough as it is, as tonight was we just got to try to move on," Tatum said. "Prepare. Get ready. Practice. Film and stuff for tomorrow. Obviously, we’re in a tough position, but we’ve got to have some pride and bounce back and just be better come Tuesday."
The season is almost surely over for the Celtics, the only question now is how early they want their season to end. If they can show some fight here and extend the series bu a game or two, it could mean a lot for how the front office approaches the offseason.
