Brian Windhorst Says He Would Pick Ja Morant Over Zion Williamson

Zion Williamson and Ja Morant were chosen with the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the 2019 NBA Draft. Both players have shown they can be franchise superstars already, making multiple All-Star teams in their first four years in the league.

Both Zion Williamson and Ja Morant play an explosive style of basketball that can cause major strain on their bodies. Brian Windhorst spoke about what worries him about both recently.

"Well, I’m worried about both of them,” said Windhorst. “Because both play with a kind of reckless abandon. Every time Ja jumps, I get worried because he has such explosive athleticism. I mean, he is such a joy to watch. He plays like his hair is on fire. It’s amazing to watch him play. If I was a young kid, just learning and watching the game, I would be attracted to his style of play.

“And Zion is probably the best in, he and Jokic are the two best interior scorers since Shaq, and Zion is six inches shorter. Zion is an absolute offensive machine. I have immense belief in his talent, but he lands like a ton of bricks every time he jumps. Like it’s both of them because Ja, he’s seven feet off the ground, and Zion because he just lands like a skyscraper falling down.

“So I don’t have all the data on what they do with those tests on machines, and they see their load. I mean, I’d be worried about both of them, but Ja has demonstrated more health and, you know, frankly, more focus on the game, so I would pick Ja.”

In the last two seasons that both have played, Williamson averaged 26.5 points and 7 rebounds per game, while Ja Morant has averaged 26.8 points and 7.4 assists per game. They are both superstars if they can stay on the court, although Zion's health issues seem much worse than Ja's, who is also dealing with problems regarding mental health more than his physical health.

Ja Morant And Zion Williamson Both Have Off-Court Issues

Ja Morant has been in the news a lot over the last year for various transgressions and controversies off the court. He will be serving a 25-game suspension to start next season due to him waving a gun around on social media again after already being punished for it once.

Zion Williamson isn't dealing with any suspensions from the league, but his name has also been dragged through the mud. A pornstar he was involved with, Moriah Mills, has gone after Zion on social media, revealing messages he's sent and the various things they've done together.

The future is uncertain for both of these talented players, but Ja seems likelier to stay healthy than Zion does. He has played 248 games in his four seasons while Zion has only managed 114. Brian Windhorst's analysis here seems solid, although both of them have to figure their lives out going into next season if they wish to become true superstars.
