Isiah Thomas Gives Perfect Advice To Jaylen Brown About $290 Million Supermax Extension: "Take The Money"

Jaylen Brown will face a major decision this offseason. He can either sign a five-year $290 million supermax contract with the Boston Celtics or demand a trade and become the primary superstar on another team.

NBA legend Isiah Thomas believes Brown should choose to sign the supermax contract. Thomas gave this advice to Brown in an exclusive interview with Heavy Sports.

"Take the money," Thomas said. "Yeah, he’s been great there. He’s had a great career there, and he’s become one of the best players in the league. They’ve done well, and he’s done well there. It’s been a win-win, I think, for him and for the Celtics."

Thomas continued while addressing several assistant coaches leaving the Boston Celtics this summer.

"Hey, I don’t care how talented your team is, when half of your coaching staff walks out of the door, that’s going to affect you,” he said. “That’s just how it goes. You lose your head coach and your top two assistants, you’re going to be impacted by that."

The Celtics are all set to lose three assistant coaches to Ime Udoka and the Houston Rockets. Udoka was sacked by the Celtics following a controversial relationship with a female staff member ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season.

Brown was close with Udoka. So, it's no surprise if he wants to reunite with him on the Rockets. Despite Udoka's absence, Brown averaged 26.6 PPG, 6.9 RPG, and 3.5 APG. The 26-year-old earned All-NBA honors for his performance in the regular season, thus becoming eligible to sign a five-year $295 million contract this summer.

Isiah Thomas Revealed When He Knew Jaylen Brown Was Special

The Boston Celtics have enjoyed a lot of success, at least in the Eastern Conference, over the last few years.

Sure, the Celtics are Jayson Tatum's team, but they wouldn't be able to reach where they are without Brown. Isiah Thomas talked about Brown during the 2022 NBA Finals and shared a story about him.

"Right after they lost.. he took a red eye and flew to New York, and the next day, this dude knocking in my door at my house, and he’s talking about, ‘How can I get better?'” Thomas said of the Celtis All-Star. “Like you say, you can get somebody the book, but they have to read the book. They have to comprehend… You talk about somebody who wants to learn… He’s a seeker. He goes out and finds it."

Brown is currently 26 years old and has the best years of his career ahead of him. The Celtics have made it clear that they want him to stay with the team. But handing the largest contract in NBA history is quite a commitment.

Keeping that in mind, it's only obvious for the franchise to think carefully before giving him an extension this summer.
