Anthony Edwards Signs A Five-Year $260 Million Extension With The Minnesota Timberwolves

Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed on a five-year, $260 million designated rookie maximum extension.

The development was reported by NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter. "Breaking: Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed on a five-year designated rookie maximum deal that could be worth $260 million, his agents tell @wojespn."

This season, Edwards averaged a career-high 24.6 points per game this season for the Wolves and the 21-year-old was also named to his first All-Star team. He was drafted first overall in 2020. As far as the numbers go, he racked up 31.6 points, 5.2 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks to help Minnesota make the first round of the playoffs this season.

The Timberwolves have made large financial commitments to Towns and Rudy Gobert, the latter of whom the franchise acquired last offseason from the Utah Jazz. Minnesota also extended center Naz Reid earlier in June.

According to The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski, the move, "provides the Wolves a sense of stability that they have needed for a long time as they try to build a contender around him, Towns, McDaniels, and Gobert."

The report further added: "After starting discussions on Friday, the two sides spent the weekend negotiating the finer points of the deal and are putting the finishing touches on the contract, which is for the full five years with no options, league sources said. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract has not been signed."

With this, the front office's mammoth commitments to their key players extend further with Towns and Gobert already in the mix. The Wolves also extended their center Naz Reid earlier this month.
