Gilbert Arenas Hilariously Impersonated Larry Hughes To Get Free Food As He Could Only Spend $400 Per Month For Two Years
- Gilbert Arenas had spent around $200,000 before he was drafted
- When Arenas slipped to the second round in the 2001 NBA Draft, he ended up being short on cash and could only spend $400 per month for two years
- Arenas then proceeded to impersonate teammate Larry Hughes in order to get free food at hotels
In the lead-up to the 2001 NBA Draft, Gilbert Arenas was expecting to be picked in the first round. To his horror, however, he slipped to the second as he was selected with the 31st pick by the Golden State Warriors.
While slipping in the draft would have hurt Arenas' ego, it stung him in another big way too. Arenas had spent an exorbitant amount of money prior to the draft and had very little left with him, so he hilariously found a way to get free food as a rookie.
"I done spend probably $200,000 before I got drafted," Arenas said during an appearance on Knuckleheads. "I had to get a financial advisor, he was like, 'So, glad you got a two-year deal. Your first-year check, that's gone. You already spent some of your second-year money... You have $400 free money for the next two years.
"So, Chris Mills being the d******* he is," Arenas continued. "He was like, 'Hey rook, we're going to go to your room, I need you to order pizza for the room and we're going to finish the game in your room,' So, I'm ordering pizza, Larry Hughes like, 'I don't want no pizza.'
"He orders room service, right? (Hughes says), 'This is Larry Hughes' room but can you send my food to this room?' Food comes, he signs it," Arenas added. "Alright, okay. (Arenas said), 'Yeah room service, can I have two cheeseburgers, three sodas, four scoops of vanilla ice cream? Yeah, this is Larry Hughes' room, bring it to room doo-doo-doo.'
"Everywhere we went two hamburgers, four ice creams, I'm Larry Hughes, man," Arenas hilariously stated. "When he caught on it, oh you talking about getting an a** whooping."

One can only imagine just how furious Hughes was when he did find out what was going on. Arenas added though that while Hughes was mad at first, he let it go and told him to keep it normal.
Fortunately for Arenas, it wouldn't be too long before he had a ton of money in his pockets. After he impressed in his first two seasons in the league, the Washington Wizards gave him a six-year, $64.02 million deal in 2003.
Gilbert Arenas Revealed How He Once Got Revenge On Some Veterans On The Warriors
While Harrington, who had only been in the league for a couple of years by then, treated him well, some of the veterans on that team certainly didn't. They didn't care too much about the fact that the rookie didn't have a lot of money to spend. Arenas revealed they had him buy donuts for them and didn't reimburse him for it either.
He initially went along with it, but when they started getting picky, he snapped. Arenas revealed he licked all the donuts and then put baby powder on them. The veterans unsurprisingly were mad after tasting it and he got an a** whooping for it. They never asked him to get donuts after that though, so it worked out for Arenas in the end.
