Pelicans GM Says Team Never Considered Trading Zion Williamson

Forward Zion Williamson is one of the top players in the league when he's healthy, and many view him as the face of the New Orleans Pelicans. He is the team's best chance of winning at a high level, but unfortunately, the team has had limited success thus far.

There have been some rumors this offseason about the New Orleans Pelicans potentially trading Zion Williamson.  However recently, GM David Griffin claimed that the team never explored trading the star.

“I think what’s unfortunate is that he’s a name that generates clicks no matter what the link says. Zion puts on his socks. People click on that. So it makes it really easy for people to manufacture rumors around him — because they don’t have to have any actual credibility behind what they say to generate clicks. As a society, this isn’t [just] true of sports, this is true across all platforms — reality doesn’t matter anymore. Generating clicks matters. So unfortunately for Zion, he’s just an oddity and somebody that people pay a great deal of attention to and manufacture a lot of stories around. We never had a single [trade] conversation that Zion was part of.” (0:14)

Trading Zion Williamson would definitely be a mistake for the New Orleans Pelicans. He is a dominant force when healthy, and moving him before exhausting every resource to keep him on the court would be counterproductive to the goal of winning a championship.

Zion Williamson averaged 26.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 4.6 APG for the New Orleans Pelicans in 29 games during the regular season. Hopefully, we see him stay on the court and lead the Pelicans back to the playoffs next year.

Some Think Zion Williamson Is A Top 10 Player When Healthy

It is clear that Zion Williamson is extremely talented, and he has a high ceiling. The key is just being on the court, and Nick Wright claimed that Zion Williamson can be a top 10 player if he plays 70 games.

“If we get 70 games of Zion Williamson, he is going to be one of the 10 best players in the league.”

It remains to be seen how the New Orleans Pelicans do next season. They have pinned their hopes on Zion Williamson's health, and they can do big things if the forward can be on the court consistently.
