Los Angeles Lakers Are Looming As A Potential Future Destination For Giannis Antetokounmpo

  • Lakers among one of two teams in the running for Giannis Antetokounmpo
  • Bucks are working to "appease" Giannis in wake of a disappointing playoff run
  • Uncertainty in Milwaukee is sparking rumors of a potential blockbuster move

Giannis Antetokounmpo has remained loyal to the Milwaukee Bucks so far, but he's starting to leave the door open for a potential breakup one day in the future. His comments on not re-signing until everyone "is on the same page" imply that the Bucks will have to earn his loyalty. If not, there will be no shortage of rival teams ready to bring him into the fold.

One such team is the Lakers, and the latest reports out of LA are giving fans renewed hope of building a proper dynasty. “The Lakers and the Knicks are already being mentioned as franchises presumed to interest Antetokounmpo down the road if he does decide to move on from Milwaukee," wrote NBA insider Marc Stein, "which just made a slew of moves (re-signing Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez and replacing Mike Budenholzer as coach with Adrian Griffin) to try to appease its face of the franchise..."

The Lakers took a more subtle approach to the 2023 offseason, signing a slew of mid-level veterans on team-friendly deals instead of going star-chasing as we've seen in years past. The strategy was widely praised by Lakers fans for a while, but how long will it last?

If Giannis does opt for free agency, he could hit the open market as soon as 2025, and it will be hard for the Lakers to resist making an offer. Giannis, a 7x All-Star, 7x All-NBA player, 2x MVP, and 2021 NBA Champion, would make the Lakers the favorites in the West and they could go all the way if Anthony Davis manages to stay healthy.

Of course, we know that the Lakers will not be the only ones in pursuit of Giannis, and it remains to be seen if he'll even leave the Bucks at all...

Giannis Faces An Uncertain Future With The Bucks

There is no question that Giannis is thriving in Milwaukee. Last season, despite coming third in the MVP race, Antetokounmpo averaged a career-high 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game on 55% shooting.

Unfortunately for Giannis, however, not even his play was enough to win when it mattered the most. In the wake of the Bucks' first-round defeat against Miami, how can he trust that things will get better?

For a guy who desires to win with such urgency, there is only so much losing that Giannis can take before he starts asking some serious questions. It is undeniable that the Bucks and, specifically, GM Jon Horst are on the clock now, but it remains to be seen how much time they have to get their act together.
