Anthony Edwards On If Timberwolves Are His Or Karl-Anthony Towns' Team
- Anthony Edwards is growing into a bonafide superstar with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
- He was asked about whether he is the main man on the team or if that's still Karl-Anthony Towns
- Anthony Edwards gave a mature and poignant answer to the loaded question he was asked
Anthony Edwards is 22 years old and going into his 4th NBA season. He has become an All-Star in 2023 and looks to be going from strength to strength.
Naturally, there have been questions about whether he is now the main man on the Minnesota Timberwolves. Karl-Anthony Towns is also a former All-Star and No. 1 overall pick. But when he was asked about it, Edwards gave an excellent answer.
“That’s what people try to do, man," Edwards told The Athletic. "They try to, like, break you up. Who’s the best player, you or KAT? Or who should take the last shot, you or KAT? And I don’t think it’s about any of that.”
Edwards added, “It’s not an individual sport. Me and KAT can’t win a game by ourselves, right? So I think I’m more team-oriented. It’s cool.”
This is an answer ahead of his years by Anthony Edwards and it shows just what a composed leader he is growing into. The Minnesota Timberwolves will have high hopes from both their stars next season and will be banking on the core of the roster to figure it out and clinch a high seed in the Western Conference.
Karl-Anthony Towns Shows Anthony Edwards Love When Asked The Same Question
Karl-Anthony Towns is a 3-time NBA All-Star and an excellent player in his own right. He was considered to be the franchise-altering superstar for the Minnesota Timberwolves when they drafted him at No. 1 overall in 2015.
While he hasn't been the guy in his career so far, Karl-Anthony Towns is still a star in the NBA. And he will always feel like the best player on the court when he steps onto it. This is what makes his answer to the same question earlier this summer so good.
“There’s a respect factor. I respect him and he respects me, and that’s why everything works,” Towns said earlier this summer. “At the end of the day, there’s a lot of egos that come with being on an NBA team.
"To have people respect each other is very hard to come by. I think he understands that I just always, unequivocally, want the best for him.”
Karl-Anthony Towns averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game last season. Anthony Edwards had more points, he averaged 24.8 per game, but fewer rebounds and assists. The answer for the Timberwolves is clearly that the two have to play together.
Anthony Edwards Has A Higher Ceiling Than Karl-Anthony Towns
Anthony Edwards has played three seasons in the NBA and he has taken a huge step in each one. In his first season, he averaged 19.3 points per game, which went up to 21.3 points per game in his sophomore year, and 24.8 points last season.
During his time with Team USA too, he proved that he is mature and can lead a team by example. The fact that he has achieved all this by the age of 22 bodes well for the future and what he can accomplish.
In contrast, Karl-Anthony Towns' numbers have declined. In the 2019-20 season, he was averaging 26.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. These numbers have fallen every year since, and he is now at 20.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game as of last season.
While the two will want to succeed together, in the long run, it would seem like the Timberwolves will be Edwards' team more than belonging to Karl-Anthony Towns.
