Giannis Antetokounmpo Opens Up On His Uncertain Future With The Bucks

  • Giannis says he's not satisfied with 2021 championship
  • Giannis wants to create "new memories" for fans to enjoy
  • Antetokounmpo admits that winning will impact his future decisions

Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks raised the Larry O'Brien trophy in 2021, but don't think he's satisfied with stopping now. In fact, for Giannis, winning remains the top priority in this next chapter of his career and it will determine his loyalties moving forward.

"I am a winner. I want to be a winner," Giannis said in a 48 Minutes podcast session with Ross Geiger. "Comfort zone does not matter to me. I don't want to, in this lifetime, talk about the same story over and over again. At the end of the day, I want to create new memories, I want to win a lot of championships... I'm a Milwaukee Buck, but most importantly I'm a winner. If there is a better situation for me to win the Larry O'Brien I have to take that better situation."

Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn't just sound like a leader, he also plays like one on the basketball court. In 10 years with the Bucks, Antetokounmpo is averaging 22.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game on 55.3% shooting. As a 7x All-Star, 7x All-NBA player, 2x MVP, and NBA champion, Giannis has done it all, and there's nothing left for him to prove at this level of the game.

Even so, Giannis has a lot to answer for after the Bucks' collapse in the 2023 postseason. Despite being the best team in the league all year long, the Bucks lost in the first round to the Miami Heat, and some of his comments after the series left many fans questioning his priorities on the court.

Giannis' True Thoughts On Failure

The "Greek Freak" often cites winning championships as his greatest motivator, but he also refused to call last season a "failure" when the Bucks failed to reach the second round of the East playoffs. In his argument, he used Michael Jordan to explain how there are no true failures in sports.

"It's not a failure, there are steps to success," said Giannis. "Michael Jordan played 15 years and won 6 championships. The other 9 years were a failure? That's what you're telling me? There's no failure in sports. There are good days and bad days; some days you're able to be successful, and some days you're not."

Failures and all, Giannis knows what it's like to achieve the ultimate success, and it's only driving him to want more of it before the end of his career. So far, since 20221, the Bucks haven't come close to winning another title but it's hard not to sense that pressure is building for the organization to catch up with the competition.

Giannis' Future With The Bucks In Jeopardy

Under contract through 2026, it's unlikely that the Bucks will even consider trading Giannis right now. With him, Khris Middleton, and Brook Lopez, the belief is that the Bucks can continue to compete for championships in the years to come. But Milwaukee is far from a dynasty in the East and if they don't make significant strides in the East next season, Giannis may find himself rethinking his commitments.

We already know that several teams are monitoring the situation with Giannis, including the New York Knicks, so the bidding will be intense if his feelings about the Bucks ever start to wane. At the very least, unless the Bucks can start winning again, Giannis will have to reconsider his options completely if he wants to avoid missing out on more championship opportunities.
