Golden State Warriors Will Reportedly Not Sign Dwight Howard
- Dwight Howard worked out with the Golden State Warriors during this week
- Shams Charania has reported that the Warriors will not sign Dwight Howard to a contract
- The Warriors want to maintain flexibility to sign a big man later in the year
Dwight Howard spent the 2022-23 season playing for the Taoyuan Leopards in Taiwan. It looked like he might make a return to the NBA next season though, when he got an invite to work out with the Golden State Warriors.
There is bad news on that front for Dwight Howard though. Shams Charania reported, "The Warriors are not expected to sign Dwight Howard or another veteran center ahead of training camp, sources tell me."
He added, "Howard had a 2-day visit with the Warriors this week that included meetings and workouts but the Warriors are expected now to maintain flexibility to sign a potential big man later in training camp or into the regular season."
Dwight Howard last played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2021-22 season and was hoping to make a return. He could still end up on another team, but as of now, it seems the Golden State Warriors didn't like what they saw from him.
NBA Fans React To Warriors Not Signing Dwight Howard
Dwight Howard is a former NBA champion, 8-time All-Star, and 5-time All-NBA First Team selection. He has declined quite a bit in the second half of his career, but many still think he can be in the league.
Fans had some interesting reactions to the news, with one fan talking about how the Warriors will regret this move later in the year.
Dwight Howard was pictured working out with Draymond Green and Chris Paul during the week. And one fan seems to think that the two veterans weren't impressed by what they saw.
Dwight Howard's desire to make an NBA return is common knowledge at this point. And the big man seemed excited to potentially be back. One fan joked about him having to go back to Taiwan after this though.
And while there are plenty of conspiracy theories about what went wrong, another fan simply thinks that Dwight Howard might be past the point of being a useful contributor at the highest level.
Dwight Howard averaged 6.2 points and 5.9 rebounds in 16 minutes per game the last time he was in the NBA, and that type of production simply isn't good enough for a lot of teams. It seems the Warriors are happy to keep their options open.
Dwight Howard Is Hoping To Retire On The Orlando Magic
Dwight Howard has played for various NBA franchises including the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Atlanta Hawks, but nearly all of his success came with the Orlando Magic.
He took the Magic to the NBA Finals, was a 3-time Defensive Player Of The Year with them, and led the league in blocks twice. While the Warriors not signing him must be disappointing, Dwight Howard implied he wants to retire with the Orlando Magic, and said he misses the city.
"I missed this beautiful city. I appreciate all the amazing moments that make this my home, despite the miscommunication or trials we've been through," Howard said.
"I am grateful for my lessons and what they have taught me. And I value them. Orlando I value you. I value the moments we had good and bad. Wins and losses. The s*** was still the best. Blue and white will always ignite."
Dwight Howard is a Hall Of Famer if he retires today, he has achieved nearly everything at the NBA level. But it seems he is not satisfied yet, and if another team does sign him, he will want to prove to the Warriors that they made a mistake.
