LaVar Ball Explains Why He Averaged Only 2.2 Points Per Game In College
- LaVar Ball is known for aggressively marketing his and his son's prowess as athletes and businessman
- However, Ball averaged just 2.2 points per game on the basketball team during his time at Washington State
- LaVar Ball opened up on why only averaged such few points in college
LaVar Ball has become some of an entertaining draw as an individual in recent times. The father of Lonzo and LaMelo Ball, his over-the-top personality and loud opinions have become a common sight for NBA fans.
LaVar Ball has made some big claims in his life, but his career as a professional athlete was woefully short. He made it to the NFL but never played a game, and his basketball career in college was even worse. LaVar Ball averaged 2.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assists during his time at Washington State. He recently opened up about it.
"Here's the thing," LaVar Ball said on VladTV. "Before I got over there (West Lost Angeles College), we averaged over 90-something points. When I got recruited over there, man I saw the most beautiful thing. I see all these girls tanning on the beaches. I was like, 'Wow, this gotta be my spot.'
"So I look at this thing man, we gonna concentrate on offense, we gotta score. I get to Washington and the coach starts stressing on just defense. So we scoring 40 points a game. So I get the ball, I go to the wing, I go to dunk or whatever, he says, 'LaVar, we don't want that, we want the ball to be passed around 8 to 10 times.'"
He added, "Now everyone's talking all that BS, LaVar only had 2.2 points, rebounds, but only played 2 minutes. And it was the worst season they ever had in their life. Cuz he wanted to show me, 'I ain't gonna play you regardless of whether you scoring or not.'"
(starts at 4:05 minutes)
LaVar Ball's explanation makes some sense, but even in the programs that don't focus on offense, 2.2 points per game is too little. And if he was playing just two minutes every game, then that is also on him and no one else.
LaVar Ball Once Said Michael Jordan Wouldn't Beat Him In A 1-On-1
LaVar Ball may not have been a stellar player in college, but no one can ever accuse him of lacking confidence. He didn't even make it to the NBA, he was only at a Division 1 school for a year, but he has a high regard for his abilities.
LaVar Ball once went as far as to say that Michael Jordan wouldn't be able to beat him in a 1-on-1 matchup.
"There’s no way he can beat me one-on-one. I was 6-foot-6, 270 [pounds] and benching 500 pounds. One-on-one? You’re going to need some help... I don’t care if you’re George Washington or Jesus, you can’t beat me one-on-one," he said in 2021.
Michael Jordan is the GOAT, he won six NBA championships, six Finals MVPs, five MVPs, and 10 scoring titles. He would rinse LaVar Ball any day at the game of basketball but that has never stopped Ball from talking big.
LaVar Ball has managed to find success for himself and his family in the last few decades, he is worth an estimated $6 million. But even his Big Baller Brand has had its fair share of controversies. While he may have many reasons for it, the fact remains that he was never a great athlete.
