Luka Doncic Admits His Ongoing Leg Injury Is A Serious Problem

  • Luka reveals he's "not okay" after suffering an injury setback
  • Mavericks fans are worried about next season
  • Doncic could regret playing through his injury for team Slovenia

Mavericks star Luka Doncic needs to be healthy and whole if Dallas stands any chance of making a deep playoff run next season. But after forcing himself to play through a nagging leg injury during the World Cup this summer, Doncic finally admitted that the seriousness of his situation.

“I do not know what to say. It's not okay,” he said after Slovenia's loss to Lithuania, per Grant Afseth of Dallas Basketball. “At the same time, I have to prepare for one more game, and then for a whole season in the NBA... “I play no matter what, even in the Olympic qualifiers, if only I'm healthy,” Doncic said.

Luka has been struggling with his leg since the NBA All-Star game in February, even though he admitted back in August that it wasn't getting any worse.

"It is an old injury, which caused me problems in March in the NBA," Doncic said in August. "Therefore, we performed an MRI. Everything is okay. Nothing worse."

Of course, Slovenia didn't have a very good showing in the World Cup this year and it's been an all-around forgettable summer for Luka and the Mavericks, who have done little to improve their roster form last season. But with Luka's health now in jeopardy, fans are wondering what it will mean for him and the squad next season.

Luka's Injury Is A Bad Omen For 2024

Had the Mavs played better during the regular season, Doncic could have easily been in the running for MVP. Through 66 games, Doncic averaged 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8 assists per game on 49% shooting and he was a leader for them both on and off the court.

But if Doncic is compromised in any way, it could spell disaster for the Texas team. Outside of him and his co-star Kyrie Irving, the Mavs don't have anyone to carry the load on offense, especially since they parted ways with scoring specialist Christian Wood.

Last season, even with Doncic on the floor, they were unable to qualify for the play-in tournament after finishing with a measly 38-44 record.

Are The Mavericks Title Contenders In 2024?

On paper, the Dallas Mavericks look like a serious threat in the Western Conference. Led by two of the top 15 players in the game right now, Dallas is heavy with top-end talent that most NBA teams would trade everything for.

The biggest problem for the Mavs, outside of Luka's health, is their supporting cast. Despite the best efforts from GM Nico Harrison, the roster is flawed in several areas including size, depth, and perimeter shooting. Unfortunately, the Mavs couldn't do much to address these issues this summer besides signing Kyrie Irving. Now, it'll be up to Kyrie and Luka alone to carry the load and deliver a better outcome for the franchise. If all goes right, they could end up shocking the world with an unexpected rise to power.
