Proposed Blockbuster Trade Sees The Chicago Bulls Acquire Trae Young

Trae Young and the Los Angeles Lakers might be the narrative doing the rounds, but a proposed blockbuster trade sends the Atlanta Hawks star to the Chicago Bulls.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report proposed a mock but quite explosive trade idea between the Hawks and the Bulls.

Atlanta Hawks receive: Lonzo Ball, Patrick Williams, Coby White, Dalen Terry, 2027 first-round pick, 2029 first-round pick and 2028 first-round pick swap

And in his column, he detailed why this trade would transform the Hawks into legitimate title contenders.

“If Young ever hit the trade market, the Bulls should be all over him. They’ve never been the same since losing Ball to a knee injury in January 2022, and it’s entirely possible that newcomer Jevon Carter won’t be able to cure what ails them at the lead guard spot. But bring Young to the Windy City, and the Bulls might bury the opposition under a pile of points. How many offensive quartets could even hope to match the combined potency of Young, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic?"

He further added:

"There may not be much defensive prowess between the four, but offense-first clubs can rule the modern NBA. Just ask the reigning champion Denver Nuggets, who were fifth in offensive efficiency but only 15th at the other end this past season."

It's fair to say that Young being the Bulls' floor general will be a sharp upgrade, but his defensive liabilities will cost Chicago dear, even if their offense is top-notch. 

Should they go up against defensively strong units like the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics in the East, locking up Young and curbing his scoring opportunities will be the first strategy that would be implemented.

Does Trae Young To The Chicago Bulls Make Sense?

There's no doubt that Trae Young is a bonafide superstar who has steadily made a name for himself in the NBA. In his four seasons since his rookie run, he has averaged 27.4 points and 9.7 assists per game, including two All-Star appearances.

While Hawks fans will surely blow this deal outright, the Bulls fans and their front office might not be as dismissive. To start with, he will replace Lonzo Ball perfectly and will address their three-point shooting, which has been their biggest concern.

But his defense will be questioned. Young isn't exactly the player who is the go-to when it comes to defensive achievements, and the second is the possibility of accepting that he will be the third superstar on the team behind DeRozan and LaVine.

The deal on paper looks doable, but the issue here will be more than just Young's defense.

The Los Angeles Lakers Have Their Eyes On Trae Young

After not landing Kyrie Irving or DeMar DeRozan – two names that were touted to play for the Lakers this new season, the focus shifted to Trae Young, who was reported to be on the team's radar. In his recent column, The Athletic's Jovan Buha explained as much.

"The Lakers have pursued other star guards, including Damian Lillard, Kyle Lowry, and Kyrie Irving. Even into this summer, there were some in the organization, including James, who still had an interest in pursuing Irving, though the front office ultimately prioritized continuity. Trae Young has long been on Los Angeles’ radar, depending on how his situation unfolds in Atlanta."

While they have pretty much sorted out their PG positions in the roster with D'Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent, there's no doubt that the Lakers will look at possibilities where they can land Young, or even Irving if that situation arises. 

If their campaign begins as disastrously as it did last season, it shouldn't be a surprise if they pull the trigger on a blockbuster move.
