Tre Mann On Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: "God Knew How Much I Loved MJ Growing Up So He Put Me On A Team With Him"

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander stole the headlines on Saturday night as he drilled the game-winner against the defending champion Denver Nuggets. Shortly after the game, his teammate Tre Mann took to X to share some high praise for Gilgeous-Alexander.

"God knew how much I loved MJ growing up so he put me on a team with him."

While it is a bit too soon to talk about Shai and Michael Jordan, you can't fault Mann for hyping up his teammate. Gilgeous-Alexander is having another excellent season for the Oklahoma City Thunder and against the Nuggets, he had 25 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals as he led the Thunder to a 119-118 win.

For the season, he is now averaging 30.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 2.7 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. The 25-year-old still has some ways to go to be mentioned in the same breath as the man who is widely regarded as the greatest player ever, but he is certainly in the conversation for best guard in the NBA at the moment.

To go with his offensive prowess, he has played defense at a fairly high level as well and I'm not saying that because of his steals and blocks. He has genuinely played good defense and when you combine his exploits on both ends of the floor, you get a player who certainly has an argument to be called the best guard in the league.

Doc Rivers Regrets Trading Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

The Thunder have been the benefactors of Shai's excellence on the court since last season, but it could have been the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers had acquired him via a draft day trade in 2018 but decided to include him in a package for Paul George in 2019.

Doc Rivers was the Clippers' head coach at the time, and Rivers says he regrets trading Gilgeous-Alexander for George. He claimed he told management that they had to hold on to Shai, but ultimately, the deal was only going through if he was in it. Rivers admitted, though, that even he didn't think Gilgeous-Alexander would turn out to be this good.

Steve Nash Believes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Can Be The Greatest Canadian Basketball Player

While being the greatest player in NBA history would be a tall task, Shai could certainly go down as the greatest Canadian basketball player ever. That title currently belongs to Steve Nash, who stated that Gilgeous-Alexander can be better than he was.

Nash is a Hall of Famer who won two MVPs and was included in the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team, so it won't be easy by any means. Shai has plenty of time on his hands, though, and if he keeps his head down and continues to work on his game, he has a shot at surpassing Nash.

He has already accomplished one feat for Canada that Nash never did, which is winning a medal at the FIBA World Cup. At the 2023 edition, Shai shone as he led Canada to the Bronze medal, their first-ever medal of any kind at the tournament.

His efforts also saw him earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team and you could make an argument he was the best player in the World Cup. The next goal for Gilgeous-Alexander would be to lead Canada to their first medal at the Olympics since they won Silver all the way back in 1936.
