Although it is late in the season, NBA teams may still need to make additions to their roster due to injury issues, or perhaps to address a need on their team. With the trade deadline being over, the only way teams can add someone to the roster currently is through free agency. There are plenty of capable veterans on the free-agent market right now, and surely, some of them can help an NBA team.
HoopsHype has recently posted a list that details the best free agents currently available for teams to sign. There are players at every position, and teams would have a variety of players to choose from for each of those positions. Some of these veterans are former NBA players, some played overseas, and others are G-League players who have impressed. Here are the top free agents available on the market for each position.
Point Guard

There is a variety of G-League standouts to pick from at the point guard position, and a team could potentially take a chance on a G-League player who can play spot minutes and fill a role. On top of G-League prospects, there are also a variety of intriguing veterans that a team could choose from to fill their PG position. Isaiah Thomas recently had a chance to play for the New Orleans Pelicans on a 10-day contract, but he is back to being a free agent as of now. Isaiah Thomas could potentially be a great bench spark for a roster, being able to space the floor and fill a leadership role off the bench. Jeremy Lin and Shabazz Napier could fill a similar role to Isaiah Thomas on a roster, as they are both capable of running an offense and spacing the floor.
Emmanuel Mudiay is a player that could definitely be a bench floor leader, as he is a passable defender, and can set up his teammates well. Quinn Cook is an exciting option for a team in need of shooting: he shoots 40.8% from beyond the arc for his career. Cook is also a two-time champion, and he could be a great player to help a contending team with his shooting.
Shooting Guard

A team looking for a shooting guard would have a great variety of veterans to pick from, as well as potentially signing a G-League player. A team looking for a shooter to knock down a couple of threes a game could look at players like Kyle Korver, Courtney Lee, and J. R. Smith. There are potential defensive specialists in Iman Shumpert and Justin Anderson. Dion Waiters and Jamal Crawford are both players that can provide a bench spark, and potentially get hot.
One of the more interesting names on this list is Allonzo Trier. Trier hasn’t been on a roster since the 2019-20 season, but in his two seasons with the New York Knicks, Trier showed an ability to create his own shot in isolation. For a team that is in need of a player who can soak up some offensive touches, Allonzo Trier could be the player to sign.
Small Forward

At the small forward, there are a variety of players who could fill the 3 and D role for a roster. Glenn Robinson III, Allen Crabbe, and Wilson Chandler are all players who played in the NBA relatively recently and are solid defenders who can somewhat space the floor. DeMarre Carroll and Lance Stephenson are both known for their defense: both are able to switch onto different positions and do an admirable job guarding the perimeter. Michael Beasley is a solid creator in isolation, and could potentially be a bench spark plug.
Joe Johnson is a veteran who has been trying to come back to the NBA, and his veteran presence could potentially be useful for a contending team. Most contending teams need a player who can provide a calming influence and Joe Johnson could be that guy for a franchise as the last man off their bench.
Power Forward

There are a few notable names here. Kenneth Faried is a PF who last played for the Houston Rockets, averaging 12.9 PPG and 8.2 RPG during the 2018-19 season. He could potentially be a great backup big man who brings hustle and energy on the floor. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is another option who brings switchability, and he can comfortably defend 1-4 on the court.
Marquese Chriss and Jonas Jerebko are both big men who can shoot the ball, which is appealing to any team in need of more spacing. While they aren’t going to move the needle by themselves, they are definitely players who can be solid coming off the bench.
Center
Thon Maker, Ian Mahinmi, Amir Johnson, Greg Monroe, Tyson Chandler, Omari Spellman, Skal Labissiere, Miles Plumlee, Anzejs Pasecniks, Nene, Ekpe Udoh, Ike Anigbogu, Tyler Zeller, Festus Ezeli, Dewan Hernandez
The center position has some solid centers who can rebound and play spot minutes. Greg Monroe, Ian Mahinmi, and Tyson Chandler are all centers that can rebound the ball well and provide some presence on the interior. A team in need of a big man at this stage of the season isn’t going to get a player that can start, but those 3 options would provide a decent big man who thrives in the interior.
Thon Maker is a big man that can shoot the ball, and he is only 24 years old. There have been a decent amount of teams who take chances on unknown prospects in the last few years. While Thon Maker was a disappointment for many fans, he could potentially develop given minutes. While Thon Maker isn’t going to be a permanent solution, he would be perfect for a team in need of a stopgap big man.
