The Boston Celtics have had an interesting offseason so far. While they managed to move Kemba Walker's contract to the Oklahoma City Thunder and acquire Josh Richardson as wing depth, they've also let free agent Evan Fournier join the New York Knicks, after acquiring him in a midseason trade last season. Currently, the Boston Celtics have a hole at point guard. While Marcus Smart can be a solid playmaker at times, it is clear that they must add a lead point guard who can run an offense.
It looks as though the Boston Celtics will be targeting Dennis Schroder, who has not yet signed a contract. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype has revealed that the Boston Celtics are interested in the point guard on a short-term deal.
The Boston Celtics have interest in signing free-agent point guard Dennis Schroder league sources told HoopsHype. The Celtics have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception at their disposal and could agree to a short-term deal. Schroder and the Celtics could agree to a one-year deal or a two-year deal with a player option, league sources said.
The Celtics are looking to add another guard to the roster alongside Marcus Smart and Josh Richardson, who was acquired this offseason. If Schroder signed with Boston, he could potentially be the team’s third scoring option behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown with the opportunity to improve his stock and potentially enter the market again next offseason.
Dennis Schroder rejected an $84M extension with the Los Angeles Lakers prior to free agency, but no team has been willing to give him close to that thus far. If Dennis Schroder were to join the Boston Celtics, perhaps he could play up his value on a competing team, and then get a big payday next free agency. It remains to be seen if the Celtics and Schroder will come to an agreement, but this arrangement could be beneficial for both sides.
