Michael Jordan ruled the roost in the 1990s, he was the main man in the NBA. And while his star had been rising since he came into the league, the 90s catapulted him to the next level. Following the Bulls' winning their first threepeat, during which time Jordan also shone on the Dream Team. This saw his meteoric rise to global superstardom, and MJ became popular in many parts of the world.

Even people who haven't ever watched an NBA game in the furthest corners of the world know Michael Jordan's name. He was as popular as anybody has ever been, and it's a large part of his legacy. It's not just his many achievements on the court that make Michael Jordan the GOAT, it's the impact he had on the world of sports at large in terms of commercialization and player power.

Michael Jordan is often compared to LeBron James when it comes to the GOAT debate, people are saying he could surpass MJ when he breaks Kareem's record. But the reality is more complicated than that.

John Salley's Unique Take On What Makes Michael Jordan The GOAT

What matters a lot more than anything else is the legacy and the imprint that individuals leave behind through their work. And there's no doubt that while LeBron James has been culturally significant, Michael Jordan's fame was on a different level at times. John Salley compared him to some unbelievable names when talking about the debate.

"Jordan was designed, the same way Jesus has been designed. So, people sit around and talk about Jesus Christ from 2019 years ago...

"Muhammad Ali is the greatest of all time... The reason Michael Jordan is never going anywhere is because of Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth played in the 20s, or 30s, or 40s or whenever Babe Ruth played. And they still talking about Babe Ruth... That's what Michael Jordan is going to be in 50 years. He's going to be the Babe Ruth of basketball.

"There's only one Babe Ruth, and there's only one Michael Jordan, and there's one Jesus Christ and then there's Michael Jackson."

This is an elite company for Salley to be mentioning Michael Jordan in, but there is no question that His Airness belongs in these conversations. The GOAT of any sport or field is hard to pin down, but some players transcend all that. While it's a bit much to compare Michael Jordan to Jesus Christ himself, Salley's larger point about his fame and its impact on the GOAT conversation cannot be ignored.
