The Los Angeles Lakers continue to be one of the more baffling teams in the NBA this season. On the one hand, they have LeBron James, still one of the league's best despite being in his 20th season. On the other hand, the roster has been getting worse around him and Anthony Davis since they won in 2020, and this season, the holes have become even more glaringly obvious.

The team has managed to get good production out of Russell Westbrook, who is now playing well in a role off the bench. However, the rest of the team is devoid of game-changing talent, which becomes even more apparent any time Anthony Davis misses time through injury. Their loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas day has sunk the Lakers into another hole in terms of record, and even LeBron James has hinted that it is hard to see them climbing back from this one.

As such, a potential trade has become the only option for the Lakers to truly make a difference moving forward. There have been plenty of options suggested on that front by analysts and fans, but it seems the front office doesn't quite see things the same way as everyone else.

An NBA Insider Has Suggested The Lakers Front Office Does Not Want To Repeat Past Mistakes

The Los Angeles Lakers swung big to get Russell Westbrook ahead of last season, and it's a move that cost them, important role players. This has become a major issue for the team. But fixing that will cost major assets, including valuable picks, and if the Athletic's Jovan Buha is to be believed, this is not something the Lakers' brain trust including Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss wishes to do.

"Reinforcements via trade would obviously help, and the Lakers are still evaluating their options on a dormant trade market. At the same time, it becomes increasingly challenging to justify trading a first-round pick if the group continues to struggle. The front office doesn’t want to compound its previous mistakes with more win-now moves."

With LeBron James nearing the end of his career soon and Anthony Davis; health still a question mark, in the long run, trading their picks would be a gamble. But they risk losing LeBron James if things don't improve, he won't want to end his career in a losing situation. There is a big decision to be made for the team before the trade deadline and what they do will define both the immediate and the long-term future of the Lakers' franchise.
