The Women's NCAA Tournament Finals is arguably the hottest topic in basketball right now after Angel Reese and the LSU Tigers beat the Caitlyn Clark-led Iowa Hawkeyes.

Angel Reese wasn't happy with First Lady Jill Biden saying she also wants to invite the Iowa Hawkeyes to the White House to celebrate it as an achievement in women's sports. Reese has responded to Biden later apologizing and only inviting LSU on Twitter by saying they'd go to the Obamas' instead.

"I'm not gonna lie to you, I don't accept the apology because of, you said what you said. ... I said what I said. And like, you can't go back on certain things that you say. I mean, you like felt like they should've come because of sportsmanship, right? They can have that spotlight. We'll go to the Obamas, we'll see Michelle, we'll see Barack... I just know that if the roles were reversed, it wouldn't be the same. If we were to lose, we would not be getting invited to the White House. I remember she made a comment about both teams should be invited because of sportsmanship. And I'm like, 'Are you saying that because of what I did?' Stuff like that, it bothers me because you are a woman at the end of the day. White, Black, it doesn't matter, you're a woman, you're supposed to be standing behind us before anything."

The comments Reese is referring to were made by Biden after the Finals, where she said, "I know we’ll have the champions come to the White House, we always do. So, we hope LSU will come. But, you know, I’m going to tell Joe I think Iowa should come, too, because they played such a good game."

No runner-up should want to accept an invite alongside the champions either way, as it will be a constant reminder that they lost and are attending as a gesture rather than earning it. Whether the Tigers actually end up going to the White House is unclear, but Joe Biden officially issued the invitation.

Reese was heavily criticized for doing a 'you can't see me gesture' towards Caitlyn Clark towards the end of the tournament Final. Players like Shaquille O'Neal and LeBron James have defended Reese from these critics.

An Unfortunate Controversy In A Moment Of Triumph

Angel Reese and all her LSU teammates should be celebrating as champions of the most-watched women's tournament ever, comfortably generating more viewers than the 2023 March Madness Final and all 6 games of the 2021 NBA Finals. However, the reactions to her repeating the same taunt Clark had used against previous opponents has caused the mood to sour.

The treatment of Reese is extremely odd as fans have long pedestalized people that talk trash in sports and back it up. That's why Clark was celebrated throughout the tournament as well. The race of the players has to be a factor, and it's sad to see a crowning moment for women's basketball be mired in this controversy.
