The Dallas Mavericks made a blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving ahead of this year's trade deadline, in an attempt to put a secondary ballhandler next to Luka Doncic. this move has not worked out thus far, as the Mavericks are now out of a play-in tournament position and look unlikely to make it.

Despite the team's struggles, it seems as though they are still interested in retaining Kyrie Irving, per NBA insider Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report. Haynes also noted that Irving will test free agency this year.

"Despite the Dallas Mavericks' struggles since acquiring Kyrie Irving, the plan is still to re-sign the star guard, league sources told Bleacher Report."

"Irving is eligible for an extension, but he will instead allow his future to be decided in free agency this summer, sources said."

There is no doubt that retaining Kyrie Irving should be the Dallas Mavericks' primary priority. They gave up a lot to acquire him, and if he leaves in free agency, this could be one of the worst trades of all time. If they can keep him, they need to retool around their star duo to have a real chance at a championship.

As of right now, Kyrie Irving is averaging 27.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 5.3 APG this season. He has been a great secondary star for the Dallas Mavericks and is a good fit with Luka Doncic offensively. The problem has been the team's defense, and hopefully, they improve on that end of the floor next year if Kyrie Irving stays with the team.

The Mavericks Could Shut Down Kyrie Irving For The Rest Of The Regular Season

The Dallas Mavericks don't have a realistic path to the playoffs, and that means the team could decide to shut down their stars. Previously, Shams Charania revealed that the team is seriously considering shutting down Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.

“I think the Mavericks have to seriously look at whether you shut down Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving these last 3 games of the regular season," reported Shams Charania. "This is a team that is one game out of the play-in behind Oklahoma City and OKC has the tie-breaker over them so they are essentially two games out of the play-in with just four games left. You have to see what happens with Utah and Oklahoma City between now and Wednesday when the Mavs play at home against the Kings. I'm told the organization is seriously considering shutting down those three guys."

Shutting down their stars could end up being a fantastic decision for the Dallas Mavericks. They can try to tank to get better positioning in this year's draft lottery, and if their pick lands in the top 10, they can get it back from the New York Knicks. It remains to be seen what the team will do going forward, and how they approach the rest of the season.
