NBA Makes Huge Change To All-NBA Teams For First Time Since 1989

The new CBA is set to take affect next season, and it will bring a number of changes to the league as we know it. Among the biggest of these changes is an updated format to the ALl-NBA voting process, which hasn't been touched since the late 80s.

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, the NBA has raised the minimum games requirement to 65 and have removed the positions entirely from the ballots.

"NBA and NBPA have agreed to a minimum number of games played – 65 games – for players to be eligible to win major individual league awards such as MVP in the new CBA, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. All-NBA teams will be positionless in the new collective bargaining agreement, with a 65-game minimum to be eligible for selection, sources tell me and @MikeVorkunov."

While it may seem like a footnote, the change actually has huge implications on the voting process going forward. No longer will players lose their chance to make a roster because voters can't agree on a position. In today's game, positions aren't really a thing anyway.

Overall, it's a win for the players, who get to have their play recognized without the restrictions of a position.

Is The New CBA Good For The League?

After some speculation on a potential lockout, both sides are in agreement on a new contract and next season should be able to commence without issue. Looking at the bigger picture, the CBA addressed a lot of important issues, like load management and the mid-season tournament, but it doesn't mean it handled everything perfectly.

There are always going to be some gripes about the details, but everybody's a winner in this CBA. The NBA gets to incorporate some exciting new rules, and players get a chance further increase their earnings.

In the future, it will be interesting to see if these changes stick and what rules will get added as the older generation of NBA stars finally fade out.
