Draymond Green Calls Out The NBA For $500,00 Prize For Mid-Season Tournament Champion
Draymond exposes new CBA for lowering prize money in mid-season tournament.
The NBA is always changing, and the newest CBA is proof of their innovation. With the league and players agreeing to a groundbreaking mid-season tournament, it will bring a lot of fresh ideas to the NBA calendar.
Unfortunately, the $500,000 prize (for each player) isn't quite the number some players had in mind, and Draymond Green made his displeasure known in a candid response on Twitter.
"What happened to the 1mm they said when this idea was first introduced?!?! sheesh we lost 500k there too!"
Originally, the NBA was considering offering a $1 million prize per player for the winning team, but that idea was scrapped for the $500,000 plan we see now.
For some players, this money will be useful to add alongside their NBA salary, but the elites making max money (or close to it) aren't going to be too phased what what essentially amounts to pocket change.
Either way, it's too late to go and change things now, and Draymond will haver to deal with the mid-season tournament as it is.
How Will The Mid-Season Tournament Change The NBA?
It's obviously too early to draw any conclusions about the mid-season tourney, but it won't be long before we find out what it's like for ourselves. Next season, the NBA could implement the event starting in November.
"The in-season tournament could arrive as soon as the 2023-24 season," wrote Woj, via ESPN. "The event will include pool-play games baked into the regular-season schedule starting in November -- with eight teams advancing to a single-elimination tournament in December. The Final Four will be held at a neutral site, with Las Vegas prominent in the discussion."
According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the games will count towards the standings and will involve the two finalists playing an extra 83rd game to decide the winner.
"Each in-season tournament game would count toward regular-season standings; the two finalists would ultimately play an 83rd game that would not count in the regular season. Winning players and coaches will earn additional prize money."
The whole things sounds interesting enough, but incentivizing these players to go all-out for a tournament in November is not going to be an easy task, especially when the prize money is as low as it is.
