Scottie Pippen Claims Michael Jordan Used "The Last Dance" Documentary To Gain Relevance In The Modern Era

Former Chicago Bulls shooting guard Michael Jordan is one of the biggest legends in the sport of basketball, and many view him as the best basketball player to ever live. There's no doubt that many revere him as an icon.

The documentary "The Last Dance" was an amazing docu-series that chronicled Michael Jordan's six championships. It gave younger audiences a glimpse into what made Jordan the great player that he was. However, Scottie Pippen has recently called out Michael Jordan regarding the documentary, claiming that he used it to make himself "more relevant in today's world." (29:50)

“I didn’t really need the credit, but I felt it was definitely something that was more geared towards Michael and his perspective of how he saw the team, how he saw himself separate from the team," Pippen said. "I just thought it was really something to hype up his career to make him more relevant in today’s world. …

“(It’s been) pretty much 25 years since we won our last championship, so no one really remembers the Chicago Bulls – especially a lot of the kids that are now coming into the game. They weren’t even watching basketball, they were barely even born. So I felt like that was something he did to sort of bring himself back and really give this modern-day era an opportunity to see what his playing was like in the NBA.”

The Last Dance documentary definitely helped Michael Jordan's greatness to reach a new audience, but it is unfair to say that the sole purpose of it was to "hype up" his career. At the end of the day, Michael Jordan won six championships and went 6-0 in the Finals, and he doesn't need a documentary for people to recognize him as one of the best players to ever hoop.

Scottie Pippen Has Criticized Michael Jordan In The Past

This is far from the only time that Scottie Pippen has taken jabs at Michael Jordan. In fact, he previously claimed that Michael Jordan was a "selfish player" and did things that were "based on him as an individual."

"I mean he was a great scorer, but a lot of things that he did was based on him as an individual. I think basketball is a team game."

It is clear that despite the fact that Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan won six championships together, their relationship isn't necessarily extremely friendly. It'll be interesting to see what further comments the two make about one another in the future.
