Dallas Mavericks Mentioned As A Potential Landing Spot For Ja Morant

The discourse around Ja Morant has gotten quite intriguing. On the one hand, the Memphis Grizzlies superstar possesses the talent to be one of the greatest ever. On the other hand, he is possibly looking at one of the longest suspensions in league history.

Ja Morant leaving the Grizzlies wasn't even something to entertain till recently, but the possibility cannot be denied. And Noah Weber of The Smoking Cuban has evaluated the Dallas Mavericks as a landing spot for Ja.

"The on-court fit on paper is excellent. Morant is one of the best young point guards in the league, and he would be a guaranteed franchise cornerstone next to Doncic. Dallas will need a new point guard if Kyrie Irving decides to sign elsewhere this summer, and Morant is arguably better than Irving."

A potential sign-and-trade involving Irving was then suggested, although the Grizzlies might not want to trade their young superstar guard with off-court issues for an om superstar guard with off-court issues. Weber did say that there is a caveat to consider trading for Morant.

“But the off-court fit is atrocious. Morant has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently, and Dallas typically has a team consisting of players that stay out of trouble off the court. Dallas could potentially help Morant stay out of trouble, but the risk may be too high."

Ja Morant is a Top 10 player in the NBA, and he could form a generational backcourt next to Luka Doncic. But at this point, it is hard to say how he will recover from all the negative attention and a big suspension, meaning it wouldn't make sense to trade for him, even if the Grizzlies did put him on the market.

The Dallas Mavericks Should Focus On Re-Signing Kyrie Irving And Acquiring A Defensive Force

For better or for worse, all of the Mavericks' eggs this season seem to be in the Kyrie Irving basket. If they can re-sign him, they should look to either draft the likes of Jarace Walker or Taylor Hendricks with the 10th pick or package it in a trade to grab a starting defensive wing or center.

The Mavericks have excellent offense, with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic in the picture, but a defensive presence is a necessity. What they need are size and defense, and those should be the objectives instead of a pie-in-the-sky potential trade for Ja Morant.
