Donovan Mitchell Might Not Sign An Extension With The Cavaliers In The Future

Donovan Mitchell's future with the Cleveland Cavaliers is on the clock, and chances are that he may not ink an extension with the franchise in the future.

ESPN analyst and NBA insider Tim Bontemps highlighted the situation and provided a grim take on the guard's next few seasons with Cleveland. Speaking to his colleagues Tim MacMahon and Brian Windhorst, he said:

"I don't think there's any chance he signs an extension there ever. And if it was up to me, I would trade Donovan Mitchell today…they'll get a lot more for him w/ 2 summers left than they will w/ 1…Now I also am fully aware that's not what they're gonna do and I understand why…"

To which Windhorst further added:

"…This Fall when Donovan doesn't extend…I'm sure he'll get asked about it at Media Day & I'm sure he'll have a very good answer & maybe even a hedge answer, & um, that'll be interesting…"

Much of how the Cavaliers fare this season depends on whether they retain the trio of Mitchell, Jarrett Allen, and Darius Garland. For now, the trade rumors have Allen on the block, but the Cavs will surely look at retaining Mitchell and Garland. The latter has been pivotal, averaging around 22 points in the last two seasons.

The Cavaliers May Trade Donovan Mitchell If The Team Struggles This Season

The Cavaliers pulled off a blockbuster trade when they got Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz for Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen, Ochai Agbaji, a 2025 first-round pick, a 2026 pick swap, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 pick swap, and 2029 first-round pick.

According to Bontemps, the organization may trade the prolific guard if the team struggles in the 2023-24 NBA season. He was consistent for the Cavs averaging 28.3 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 4.4 APG in the regular season.

However, he couldn't contribute at the same level in the postseason, as he averaged 23.2 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 7.0 APG in the first-round series against the New York Knicks. The latter won the series 4-1 and advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Only time will tell if Mitchell and the Cavs can make a deeper run this season.
