The Heat Still Have A Way To Retain Tyler Herro In A Potential Damian Lillard Trade
The Miami Heat can still retain the services of Tyler Herro and land Damian Lillard, but that would also come with a lengthy list of players and capital that needs to be moved.
According to Heat insider Greg Sylvander, the team can still have Herro in their ranks, but in the process, will have to offer Kyle Lowry, Duncan Robinson, Caleb Martin, Nikola Jovic, Jaime Jacquez Jr., first-round picks, and first-round pick swaps.
That's a lot of names going out at the cost of retaining one player, but Herro has been crucial for the Heat. Prior to his playoff injury, he averaged more than 20 points each in the past two seasons, was key in the 2020 NBA Finals, and was named the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 2022.
As far as his numbers go last season, Herro put up 20.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, and 4.2 APG while shooting 37.8% from beyond the arc.
So it does makes sense and only right that Miami doesn't budge with their player for a man who will instantly elevate the team to title contenders. Lillard comes at a high asking price that the NBA teams are aware of, but for the Heat, it's about the decision to keep or trade Herro.
NBA Analyst Ira Winderman Believes The Heat Should Do Right By Tyler Herro
As right as it sounds that Damian Lillard wants to play for the Miami Heat and vice-versa, one cannot count out the contributions that the young guard has made for the side.
In his column for Sun Sentinel, NBA analyst Ira Winderman wrote that the Heat cannot just look at Herro as a tradeable asset.
"No one involved in the Lillard trade speculation has been treated as unjustly and unfairly as Tyler Herro, who seemingly has been dismissed as unworthy of even being mentioned in the same sentence as Lillard."
There's no doubt that Herro for the Blazers will be a new move for the guard. While it gives him a chance to be part of the younger unit comprising Anfernee Simons, Scoot Henderson, and Shaedon Sharpe. But on the flip side, it would mean having a clogged floor with too many guards in the unit.
Only time will tell where Herro will land ahead of the start of the new season.
