LeBron James recently went viral on social media after being spotted in a viral video from 2013. In the footage, a younger James is seen hanging out at Michael Jordan's 50th birthday party with other NBA legends like Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony.
James has since responded to the throwback video, sharing what the conversation was like at the time: "This was on helluva conversation and night! Big big sh*t talking and vibes," James wrote before signing off with a #RipMamba on the bottom.
MJ's 50th birthday was a pretty huge event that many players experienced. At the time, all of the game's top players were there, including LeBron and Kobe, who were rarely in the same room together.
Sadly, for us outsiders, we will never know what was said in that birthday meeting but it should be no surprise to anyone that LeBron still remembers that encounter 10 years after it happened.
Considering how many high-level competitors were in the same space together, it's fair to say things got intense at some point that day, especially with Kobe likely doing a lot of trash-talking.
Bryant was just built differently from the rest, and he had a way of drawing attention wherever he went. He also left a lasting impression on the players who were able to know him both on and off the court.
What Was LeBron's Relationship With Kobe?
While often considered rivals/competitors, LeBron and Kobe actually had a deep respect for each other and often went out of their way to express appreciation for each other.
"To be able to shoot fadeaway like Michael Jordan, to be able to cross someone over like Allen Iverson, to have an afro and jump in a dunk contest like Kobe Bryant," said LeBron during his All-Time scoring leader speech. " I looked up to so many athletes and people on my journey. they gave me inspiration and they allowed my dreams to not die."
Kobe differed from James in many ways, but they both shared the same hunger and desire to win. For LeBron, who is still active today, he is using the mindset of Kobe, and others, to propel this final stage of his career.
And even though he's at the top of the basketball world, with nothing left to prove, he has no shame in looking back and remembering how it all began
