DJ Wagner Could Form The First Ever Father-Son-Grandson Combo In NBA History

  • DJ Wagner is set to be one of the top picks of the 2024 NBA Draft
  • If and when Wagner makes it to the NBA, he will make history
  • His father Dajuan and grandfather Milt both played in the NBA previously

We have had a fair few father-son duos play in the NBA over the years, but there has never been a father-son-grandson combo ever. We might not have to wait for too long to get one, though, as DJ Wagner can help create it next year.

Wagner could enter the 2024 NBA Draft and if he makes it, he'd become the first-ever third-generation NBA player in the process. Let's take a look at his incredible family tree.

His grandfather Milt Wagner was selected with the 35th pick in the second round of the 1986 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He played two seasons in the NBA, one with the Lakers and the other with the Heat.

Milt won a championship with the Lakers in 1988 and had career averages of 4.1 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.

His father Dajuan Wagner, meanwhile, was the sixth pick in the 2002 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Injuries and health issues meant he only played four seasons in the league, though.

Dajuan played three seasons with the Cavaliers and one with the Warriors, after which he had career averages of 9.4 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.7 steals per game.

DJ Wagner Could Become A Star In The NBA

DJ has the potential to be far better than both his father and grandfather in the NBA. A five-star recruit, he is one of the top prospects in the nation as of now and committed to the University of Kentucky last year.

Provided he stays healthy, there's no reason DJ won't be in the NBA next year. We got our first look at the 18-year-old for Kentucky when they took on Team Germany in their opening game of the 2023 GLOBL Jam in July earlier this year.

Wagner had 16 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in the contest and showed why he is held in such high regard.

Some Other Potential Father-Son-Grandson Combos

While Wagner will almost certainly be the first, who else can potentially be on this list years later?

The Curry's are potentially a contender to make it. Dell Curry played in the NBA from 1986-2002 and his two sons Seth and Stephen have made it as well.

Seth Curry has two sons, while Stephen Curry has one. Steph's son Canon has been seen shooting with his dad and who knows, one day he might be in the NBA.

Interestingly, four of Curry's Golden State Warriors teammates could also form this combo someday. Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Gary Payton II, and Trayce Jackson-Davis all had fathers who played in the league

LeBron James' son Bronny, meanwhile, is aiming to get into the league next year and his younger brother Bryce has aspirations of making it to the NBA as well.

It could be that 25-odd years later, we see one of their kids also make the league, but it'll be a long wait before we find that out.
