The Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is regarded as the best player in the league by many. Still there are many who disrespect him. The Greek Freak already has a solid resume at the age of 27 years old, and he can still add a plethora of accolades to his name.
But the question is, when will people unanimously recognize Giannis as the best player in the league? He has already won an NBA Championship, NBA Finals MVP, two NBA regular season MVP awards, and a Defensive Player of the Year award.
Despite these achievements, there are some who criticize him for his style of basketball. Most recently, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas called out Antetokounmpo for apparently not understanding how to train his body and not understanding basketball.
Obviously, Arenas received a lot of backlash for his comments, and NBA analyst Chris Broussard was among the people who clapped back at the former NBA star.
Via Sportskeeda:
“Basketball is not a skills competition … In basketball, it’s about production and winning .. .He’s not Kevin Durant, he’s not Dirk Nowitzki, he just can’t shoot very well, but he’s got very good skills for a guy his size. And when you combine it with his athleticism, his production is off the charts!
At this moment in time, he should be beyond these little petty criticisms. They weren’t criticizing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar because he didn’t shoot 18-foot jump shots. They didn’t criticize Shaq because he didn’t shoot threes. So, don’t criticize Giannis because he doesn't handle the ball like Kyrie Irving or shoot like Kevin Durant!”
Broussard made a very good point about Giannis' talent by using examples of other players. As he explained, Shaq was never berated for not shooting three-pointers during his NBA career.
Similarly, Giannis shouldn't be called out for his style of playing basketball. Despite a few flaws in his game, he has won a lot of accolades in his career. Hopefully, the disrespect for Giannis will stop soon.
