Vince Carter Told LeBron James What He Had To Do To Surpass Kobe Bryant On The All-Time List In 2020, And LeBron Did It That Same Season

LeBron James has become a fixture in the GOAT debate, many people believe he is already the best to ever do it. However, a majority of the NBA fanbase still ranks Michael Jordan over him.

Before he won his fourth championship and broke the scoring record, some people also put Kobe Bryant above James. Vince Carter was one of those, but in 2020, when he listed what James needed to do to be above Kobe, the King delivered that very same year.

Matt Barnes asked Vince Carter, "So for the record, you’ve got MJ, then Kobe, then LeBron?" Carter said yes, and Barnes then asked, "Does LeBron have the opportunity in your mind to possibly jump Kobe?"

Carter explained, "He has an opportunity based on what he gets done. If he gets to the Finals again… You’re just gonna give him more credit. Now, ten times in the Finals?! That’s insane if he can get to the Finals double-digit. Wait until it’s all said and done, then it’s fair to have a real debate. Let’s see what LeBron does and then we’ll go from there."

This conversation occurred in 2020, and that very same year, LeBron James not only made it to his 10th NBA Finals, he won the championship. That was his fourth ring in the NBA Bubble, and he also won his fourth Finals MVP. The Los Angeles Lakers became the third team that LeBron James led to the title as well, and it's safe to say that he has since gone above Kobe Bryant in the all-time rankings.

LeBron James Is Ahead Of Kobe Bryant When It Comes To Achievements And Statistics

LeBron James has now played 20 seasons in the NBA, the same as Kobe Bryant did. In that time, he has one more All-Star appearance, three more MVPs, two more Finals MVPs, and two more All-NBA First Team selections. He won one less championship, but his other achievements are greater than Bryant's.

He leads Kobe Bryant in every major statistic, averaging more points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks than the Mamba in his career. LeBron James is firmly ahead of Kobe Bryant by any metric at the moment, even their Game 7 stats prove it. Bryant does lead in some categories, but any discussion about this shows that LeBron's body of work in his career puts him in a higher position.
