Victor Wembanyama On His Mother's Influence On Basketball: "It's Better To Fade Off"

  • Victor Wembanyama's mother, Elodie De Fautereau, is a youth basketball coach
  • Wembanyama revealed in 2022 that his mother didn't have much involvement in planning his career, though
  • Victor Wembanyama said his mother 'knows her role' and that she hasn't been too involved in improving his performance

Victor Wembanyama has finally made it to the NBA, with less than two months left before the hyped No. 1 overall pick takes the floor against the Dallas Mavericks.

It will be a massive moment for his entire family, who have all been quite involved in basketball at different times in their lives. He spoke about his mother, Elodie De Fautereau's impact on his basketball career.

"She teaches basketball to young players, like, from 4 to 10 or something like that. But for performance, I never trained with her," Wembanyama said to the EuroLeague's official website in early 2022

"It's not that she doesn't want to get involved in my performance, but she knows her role. You know what I mean? And she knows as a parent sometimes it's better to fade off or not to get too much involved in your children's path."

These words from Victor Wembanyama sound far from ideal in terms of what a son should say, but he is also far from a normal child. Having been tipped for greatness at an early age, it seems that he has always been fiercely independent.

Victor Wembanyama's Entire Family Is Quite Athletic

Standing at 7'4" and weighing 210 pounds and being able to move like a guard, Victor Wembanyama can easily be referred to as a unicorn. And he has to have gotten his incredibly physical abilities from somewhere.

Victor Wembanyama's mother, Elodie De Fautereau, introduced him to the sport of basketball, according to some. Listed at 6'3", she was a professional player before transitioning into a career in youth basketball coaching.

And it's not just his mother who is incredibly athletic. Victor Wembanyama's father, Felix Wembanyama, competed in track and field events and was a star. He was from the Democratic Republic of Congo but never competed in the Olympics.

Victor Wembanyama's siblings are also involved in sporting endeavors; his brother Oscar is a handball player, and his older sister Eve also plays basketball and won a gold medal with France at the 2017 U16 European championship.

Victor Wembanyama's Confidence In Himself Has Only Grown Since Then

At the time that he gave this interview, Victor Wembanyama was still over a year out from even being drafted into the NBA. But his words show that he has believed in himself from a very early age.

What some might deem to be disrespect toward his mother showcases that Victor Wembanyama has the utmost confidence in himself. To be able to talk about finding his path as an 18-year-old outside his parents is unheard of.

Victor Wembanyama has the same level of confidence, if not more, going into his first season. He has already outlined his early goal to be a championship with the San Antonio Spurs during the 2023 NBA Draft.

"My heart's beating. I got everyone I love around me," Wembanyama told Brian Windhorst.

"It's really a special moment I'm gonna remember for the rest of my life... I'm gonna make everything to win as many games as possible. I'm trying to win a ring ASAP, so be ready."

All eyes will be on Victor Wembanyama this season, and the expectations from him are massive. It wouldn't be surprising to see him come out hot though, and average over 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks as a rookie.
