Victor Wembanyama Wants To Win A Championship Right Away With The San Antonio Spurs

As one of the NBA's top young stars, expectations couldn't be higher for 2023 no. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama. Despite having no experience at the NBA level, Wemby is confident that he can live up to expectations and he's hoping to start competing for titles right away given how successful the Spurs have been over the past two decades.

“Everybody wants it, for sure. But some more than others," Wembanyama said. "I know the Spurs know how to do it, they’ve done it in the past multiple times, and they’re gonna do it again… Some day, it’s gonna come, I’m sure.” 

Some experts predict that it could take Wemby years to reach his full potential, but the flashes he showed in Summer League suggest that he could be a stud right out of the gate. If he can stay healthy this season, Gregg Popovich will lead him on the path to prosperity and it could be all he needs to set up a long and successful career.

Victor Wembanyama Is A Star

In his last professional season, Wembanyama took home LNB Pro A's scoring title with a final stat line of 21.6 points and 3.0 blocks per game for the Metropolitans 92. While it's impossible to determine for sure how his game will translate to the NBA, Victor has all the makings of a basketball star and he's looked good in the NBA setting so far.

After being drafted first overall this summer, the Spurs are hoping that Wembanyama can be their next franchise player and there's no better choice they could have made in the draft. Standing at 7'4" with an 8-foot wingspan, Victor is an absolute freak of nature and his impact is limitless on the court. Even so, questions remain on whether Wembanyama alone is enough to make the Spurs a serious threat in the West this season. So while Wemby sets up a groundbreaking future for the Spurs, there's no guarantee that it will all come together this season.

The Spurs Are Not Ready Yet

In the aftermath of the Tim Duncan era, it was Kawhi Leonard who was supposed to usher in the next era of greatness for the Spurs. But when he left the franchise in 2018, it forced the team into an early rebuild that is still ongoing today. As recently as last season, the Spurs finished dead last in the West with a 22-60 record overall. The good news is, that the team's struggles were able to land them the top prize of the summer -- but the work is really just now beginning for GM Brian Wright.

If they want to keep Wembanyama happy, they will need to keep the team at least somewhat competitive and that will involve staying active in free agency and the trade market. This season, Popovich will no doubt spend the first half of the season figuring out what he has, and we already know that young players like Jeremy Sochan and Devin Vassell are due to up their play from last season. Only time will tell how they are able to lead the Spurs in the 2023-24 campaign.
