Christian Wood Says He And Luka Doncic Go Together Like 'Ice Cream And Fudge'

The Dallas Mavericks have pulled off an unlikely win streak while the roster has been hampered by injuries. Their best defensive big man Maxi Kleber will miss most of the season, while Dorian Finney-Smith and Josh Green have been missing time as well. Despite this, the Mavs have pulled off 7 consecutive wins.

The team has heavily relied on production from Luka Doncic, Spencer Dinwiddie, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Christian Wood. Wood was acquired via trade in the summer and was used off the bench until injuries to Kleber and Finney-Smith forced Jason Kidd to make him a starter.

His chemistry with Luka has been extremely solid, and the pair evidently enjoy playing with each other. Wood described his relationship with Doncic after the Mavericks' comeback win against the Rockets.

"Luka, me and he have this weird connection. He just keeps telling me to keep shooting. He trusts me to shoot it and the guys trust me to make shots and big defensive plays, which I am starting to do. We go together like ice cream and fudge, I guess."

Wood is averaging 19.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks in 10 games as a starter this season. He and Doncic have had great things to say about each other, and this duo may be crucial for the Mavs' hopes this season.

Will The Mavericks Re-Sign Christian Wood?

Christian Wood is a free agent this summer, and the Dallas Mavericks are yet to sign an extension with the center. While the team wants flexibility for the future to ensure they can go after a top-tier free agent, they can't afford to lose Wood for nothing like they did Jalen Brunson. They are already in the luxury tax, so free agency won't be of much use.

Wood could still be traded before the trade deadline, but he is showing that Dallas might just need to keep him around. Finding players that play well next to Luka is a challenge due to his play style, and Wood seems like the perfect stretch 5 for a Doncic-led system.

Hopefully, the Mavs don't have to hold off on a trade or a contract extension for too long and risk losing Wood for nothing. Watching their roster get worse for a second consecutive year on Luka's rookie extension will raise alarm bells in the franchise.
