Anthony Davis Reportedly Expected To Get A Massive $170 Million Extension Over 3 Years From The Lakers

  • Anthony Davis has just two years left on his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers
  • He is in line to receive a maximum 3-year extension worth $170 million
  • The deal between Anthony Davis and the Lakers is expected to go through, according to reports

Anthony Davis' future is a matter of great debate at the moment. The Los Angeles Lakers have built the roster around him and LeBron James once again, but it doesn't seem like a sustainable plan considering that LeBron will turn 39 years old this year.

Initially, it was assumed that Anthony Davis would be with the Lakers after LeBron James moved on too, but his injuries raised some questions about that. Now though, it seems like a massive contract extension is on the cards.

"Davis, who has two years left on his deal, does possess a player option following this season. A max extension, which would pay him an additional $170 million through the 2027-28 season, would cement him as a pillar of the franchise," Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times reported.

"While it’s unknown what Davis and his camp will seek, it would seem like a no-brainer for both sides to knock this out before training camp, with the organization continuing to build on the momentum it seized last February at the trade deadline.

"The expectation here is that it gets done, with just the particulars about options and other terms to iron out."

Anthony Davis could choose to become a free agent as early as 2024, and the Lakers could find themselves devoid of any stars if they failed to lock up the 30-year-old. Having Davis will keep them in contention for the years to come if they can also get another superstar, and that appears to be a plan.

Giving Anthony Davis An Extension Is A No-Brainer

Everyone knows the issues with Anthony Davis and his availability. The man has played more than 60 games just once for the Lakers, and that's the year they won the championship in 2019-20. But the fact that a healthy Anthony Davis means 25.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game based on last season makes him worth it.

Making $170 million over three seasons sounds like a lot of money, but considering that Jaylen Brown recently got $304 million, it's just a sign of the times. Anthony Davis needs to produce a lot more for the Lakers, but unless he has a catastrophic injury, it's a no-brainer for the Lakers to give him a 3-year maximum contract extension.
